(Han kan have mødt Johanne Mogensdatter på Nysø). 2. november 1853 tilgik han Kalvehave sogn som tjenestekarl i Balle fra Mern - 22 år gammel. Kalvehave kirkebog. John Wilsons skrift: Lars Larsen was the 9th child of Lars Magnussen and Anne Kirstine Hansen He was born 1 May 1831 at Norrevanaeng, Kalvehave, Praesto, Denmark. His father was born 24 January 1784 at Ekeby, Lundom, Malmohus, Sweden and he migrated to Sweden before 1811. His mother was born March 1788 at Bakkebolle, Kalehave, Praesto, Denmark. Lars as a young man grew up on the island of Sjaelland (pronounced Zealand). Norrevaenge being a small town on the southern inland tip of the island. He was a weaver and a fisherman by trade, also a musician playing the violin. He married Johanne Mogensen 6 October 1854 in Denmark. To them was born two children, a boy and a girl. Lars, born 21 Aug 1855 at Norrevaenge, Kalvehave, Praesto, Denmark and Pouline Kirstine born 23 Aug 1857 at Norrevaenge, Kalvehave, Praesto, Denmark. On the 18th of September at the age of 31 while Lars was out with the fishing fleet, Johanne died and was buried. Three years later, on the 15th of September 1861, Lars married Ellen Margrethe Nielsen. To them on the 25th of February 1862 at Norrevaenge, Kalvehave, Praesto, Denmark was born a baby boy. They named him Hans Peter. In April of 1863, after the death of his mother, Anne Kirstine, and leaving his father, Lars Magnussen, all alone, Lars and his wife, Ellen Margrethe, and baby son, Hans Peter, and his 2 children by his former marriage, Lars and Pouline Kirstine, accompanied by his sister, Anne Marie, and his brother, Poul, set sail aboard the ship "John J Boyd" for the United States. Here is an account of the voyage. "A company of emigrants, about 200, bound for the United States, sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark, April 23rd 1863 on the steamship "Aurora." This was the second division of a large company of emigrants who left Scandinavia that spring for Utah. The steamer "Aurora" arrived in Kiel, Germany in the morning of April 24th and the same day they went by special railway train to Hamburg, Germany where lodgings were secured for them in a large emigrant building. While their baggage was being transferred to the large and beautiful steamer "Grimsby" on which they went on board in the evening. This steamer sailed from Hamburg on the 25th and after a successful voyage of two days on the North sea it arrived at Grimsby, England on Monday morning, April 27th. Here the emigrants spent the night in a freight house. The following day, April 28th, the company went by train to Liverpool, England where the Scandinavian emigrants and 133 English emigrants boarded the ship "John J Boyd", the total number now being 776 emigrants. The company was organized by President George Q. Cannon, who appointed William W. Cluff leader, with Elders Knud H. Bruun and William S. Baxter as his counselors. Later the company was divided into seven districts. The ship sailed from Liverpool, England on the evening of April 30th, but anchored out in the river until the next morning, May 1st, when the "John J Boyd" lifted anchor and started on it's voyage across the Atlantic. The voyage proved a pleasant one and lasted only 29 days. On board, the emigrants received good food in abundance. Every seventh day a ration for each person was issued consisting of one and one-half pounds of rice, two pounds of peas, and one pound of pork, two pounds of beef, three pounds of potatoes, three pounds of oatmeal, one-fourth pound of tea, two ounces of pepper, two ounces of mustard, one-half of vinegar and a quantity of English sea biscuits. Besides this, the sick obtained wine, milk, sago, sugar and soup from the Captain's kitchen. The sanitary condition on board were very good. Only four or five persons died on the sea. The monotony of the voyage was one day (May 21st broken by seeing eight mighty icebergs crystal. They were accompanied by a wintry degree of cold and to make the illusion of the polar ocean mare effective, five whales were seen playing about the ship. The "John J Boyd" arrived safely in New York Harbor and on Sunday, June 1st, the immigrants were landed at Castle Garden. In the evening of the same day the journey was continued to Albany, New York. Lars and family continued on to Racine, Wisconsin from whence, at a later date they migrated to Mendon, Utah. Here he homesteaded land and settled down to farming. While in Mendon, five more children were born to them, Amelik Lauritz, Nephi, Anna Margrethe, Fredrick and Hannah Marie. Little Amelik Lauritz died in Mendon 21 February 1867 at 2 years and 4 months of age. Lars entered into a polygamy marriage while living in Mendon. On the 30th of November 1868 he married Anna Elizabeth Nielsen. To them was born a daughter, Caroline Emily, on 11 October 1869. In 1875 Lars and wife, Ellen Margrethe, and children packed their belongings loading everything into wagons and set out for the gold fields around La Grande, Oregon leaving behind, wife, Anna Elizabeth, and small daughter, Caroline Emily. They arrived in the Rock Creek area and there they found two settlers, an Irishman named Pat Garrity and an Englishman named Tom Cannavan. These two settlers talked the Larsen's into staying instead of continuing on to Oregon. So Lars homesteaded and secured 160 acres in Rock Creek, Owyhee, County, on which he built a log house and then began the improvement of the farm, which he converted into a rich and productive tract. Lars and family were the first permanent settlers in the Rock Creek area. The two settlers had been given the 1st and 2nd water rights to the stream and Lars was given the 3rd water right. The two settlers sold out to Tinnon and Sparks leaving Lars Larsen to be the first permanent settlers in the Rock Creek Area. Rock Creek derived it's name from the travelers on the Oregon Trail, because of the rocky crossing it sustained in the midst of an oasis in the sagebrush desert. In the early 1860' James Bascom built a stagecoach station at Rock Creed when the Federal Government created the first overland stage route. The route ran from Salt Lake City along the Bannock Indian Trail through the Portneuf Canyon to Fort Hall and then along the Oregon Trail through Rock Creek to Boise. Eastern mail was brought in by Pony Express from Brigham City, coming into Idaho at the head of Raft River near the City of Rocks, dropping off the mountains at Goose Creek near Oakley, crossing Dry Creed near Artesian and hitting the Oregon Trail at Rock Creek. Freighters coming in from Kelton, Utah also stopped at Rock Creek while bringing supplies in to the mining camps in southern Idaho. And, along the Oregon Trail an almost endless stream of emigrants rolled west. All this gives some idea of the importance of the community that nestled in the foothills of the South Hills. Rock Creek became known as a regular 50 mile stop. At one time there was a large hotel there, having 12 rooms. It also boasted of having a post office, a barn large enough to house 100 horses and the usual pool-hall and saloon. After the stage line was discontinued, many of the old buildings were torn down, but the first building, the stage station erected by James Bascom still stands on the Stricker ranch. The building having been sold by Bascom to Herman Stricker in 1875. Lars Larsen would harvest his wheat and tie it into bundles with a wheat stalk, (at the time they had no binders twine), and store the wheat until spring, then, when the water would run high in Rock Creek he would thresh his wheat by means of a water wheel for power. Lars cut large granite stones and set into frames. The bottom one was solid and the top one revolved. In this way he ground flour. They sifted the bran and the split grain out, leaving the flour. He'd change the burr to a coarse or fine grind, whatever he wanted. This mill was located on Rock Creek about 50 feet away from his home. Lars would haul his grain to Kelton, Utah that was on the railroad line between Salt Lake City and Wells, Nevada and then would bring back supplies. At Rock Creek two more children were born to Lars and Ellen Margrethe, 2 sons, Magnus and Henry. When the salmon was running, they would swim up Rock Creek and the Larsen boys would just step out of the house to the bank of Rock Creek and spear them. One of the largest ones speared was 42 pounds. On the 20th of March 1880, Fredrick, was the first of 8 persons to be buried on a grassy knoll in the Larsen private cemetery on the bank of Rock Creek on Larsen property. Anna Margrethe passed away the 29th of August 1889 at the age of 21 and she was buried in the same little cemetery as brother, Fredrick. Indians were prevalent here in the time of the arrival of the Larsen's. Mainly the Shoshonis and a few of the Bannocks. These were certainly a hazard to the emigrants and miners and settlers of the southern part of Idaho and the Rock Creek area. The Indians engaged in open combat with many of the whites as well as ambushing them along the Oregon Trail. In May of 1878 some 300 Indian warriors with their women and children left Fort Hall Reservation and on their way west, camped a few hundred yards above Strickers store and stage station. There were only two or three families living near the store, the others having left for safer quarters. The Indians under Chief Buffalo Horn wanted credit from Strickers. The storekeeper decided against it and during the night the Indians yelled and chanted in accompaniment with their tim-toms. It was a bad night for Strickers, but he opened his store as usual the next morning. The entire band approached on horseback, silent and aloof, Chief Buffalo Horn did not respond to Strickers greeting. One by one, though, the Indians passed the store and went on their way. This was the same band of Indians that later killed James Bascom at Glens Ferry as he was returning to Rock Creek The early dirt roads were rough and dirty in the summer and a quagmire of mud in the winter. Jackrabbits, coyotes, sagebrush and choking dust storms greeted the early settlers. They cleared the sagebrush and hauled it away to be used for fuel. The fertile ash soil and year-around water supply encouraged them, the first crops being grain. In the mountains was a over abundance of pure sparkling water flowing from many springs and creeks with virgin grass and vegetation in the mountain parks and coulees that would yield two to three tons per acre, if cut. Life was good to Lars and family in Rock Creek and many are the stories told of his early days. They owned the first cook stove with an oven in the Rock Creek area. Lars was a familiar figure with his long beard and as he played the violin he was in demand for the dances. He and his wife, even tho' they had learned English, still liked to converse in Danish and they subscribed to a Danish newspaper published in Illinois. In 1900 Lars had a lovely new home built by a carpenter named Mr. Pendergraft. He built it like a stockade house out of cottonwood logs cut 6 inches thick and as wide as the logs would afford. The lumber was placed on a plate that was laid all around. More lumber was fitted and notched to fit ceiling joists. This was covered with heavy building paper and then the finished siding was put on and then the roof was put on. Lars and wife enjoyed their new home and it was here that Lars passed away from heart trouble 27th of May 1905. He was buried in the Larsen private cemetery where his son, Fredrick, and daughter, Anna Margrethe, had been buried. As we reminisce, we feel a sense of loneliness, which is acquired when people have been there and gone. We shall remember of the beauty of the mountains where the last of the snow of winter would melt and bring spring with new hope for the early settlers who endured many great and varied hardships. We are grateful for the heritage passed on to us by these stalwart pioneers. |

Noter : Blandt kilderne: John og Reva Wilson, Arizona (internet).

David Jensens karakteristik og tanker om ham - fra e-mail i september 2011: Magnus Larsen is described in family stories as "carrying his body erect, and had a pleasing walking gait. He had dignity and a reserved countenance and consideration of others, no doubt a trait cultivated from his years of experience in the position he held as a valet to the nobleman he worked for nearly 18 years. Never having worked as a farmer during these years of his Danish employment, he became a very good farmer after he came to Utah; and his weaving was almost professional." I noted you listed him as a husmand, a man who has a house. Do you have any information on his occupation? If a valet and driver of wagons/buggies for the nobleman, Magnus would be one of the first ancestors not a farmer or agricultural laborer. |
